JPG vs PNG vs WebP — When to Use Each

Choosing the right image format can meaningfully affect file size, load time, and visual quality. Here is a quick guide to when each format works best:

Photographs
JPG (JPEG)
Best for photos and images with gradients. Uses lossy compression for small file sizes. Does not support transparency. The default format for most cameras and phones.
Graphics & Logos
PNG
Best for images that need transparency, sharp edges, text, or flat colors. Uses lossless compression so quality is never reduced. Larger file size than JPG or WebP.
Web Performance
WebP
Google's modern format that beats both JPG and PNG in compression. Supports transparency like PNG but at smaller sizes. Ideal for websites and web apps. Supported by all modern browsers.

How to Use

  1. Click Upload Image and choose your file (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or BMP).
  2. The original image dimensions and file size are shown below the upload button.
  3. Select the output format: JPG, PNG, or WebP.
  4. Adjust the quality slider for JPG and WebP outputs (higher = better quality but larger file).
  5. Click Convert & Download — the converted file downloads automatically.

Converting for Web Performance

Web pages load faster when images are properly sized and formatted. Converting PNG screenshots and photos to WebP typically reduces file size by 25–50% compared to JPG, and even more compared to PNG. This translates directly to faster page loads, better Core Web Vitals scores, and improved SEO rankings.

For existing JPG images, converting to WebP at 85% quality usually produces visually identical results at roughly half the file size. This is a straightforward optimization for product images, blog thumbnails, and hero images on any website.

FAQ

Does the image lose quality when converting?
PNG conversion is lossless. JPG and WebP use lossy compression — you control the quality level with the slider. At 90%+ quality, the difference is not visible to most people.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
PNG and WebP support transparency. Converting a transparent PNG to JPG will fill transparent areas with white. Converting to WebP preserves transparency.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
This tool converts one image at a time. For batch conversion, the tool can be used repeatedly with different files — no page reload needed.
Is there a file size limit?
The tool supports images up to 30 MB. Most web and print images are well within this limit.
