What is PDF Metadata?

Every PDF file contains invisible metadata — structured data about the document itself. This typically includes the author's name, the software used to create the file (such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat), the creation timestamp, modification date, subject line, and keyword tags. This data is not visible when you open and read the PDF, but anyone who inspects the file properties can see it.

This becomes a privacy concern when you share PDFs publicly or with unfamiliar recipients. A document created in Word and exported to PDF, for example, will often contain your full name, your organization, and the exact date and time the file was generated. This tool removes all of that in seconds.

How to Use

  1. Click Upload PDF and select the file you want to clean.
  2. The tool reads and displays any metadata fields found in your PDF.
  3. Click Remove Metadata to generate a clean copy.
  4. Your browser downloads the cleaned PDF automatically.

The visible content of your PDF — all text, images, formatting, and page layout — is preserved completely. Only the hidden metadata fields are cleared.

When to Remove PDF Metadata

You should remove PDF metadata before publishing documents on a public website, sharing CVs or portfolios with employers, submitting files to clients or contractors, sending documents through public email threads, or uploading to document-sharing platforms. Legal, medical, and financial PDFs that change hands frequently benefit the most from metadata removal.

FAQ

Will removing metadata break my PDF?
No. The tool uses PDF-lib to rebuild the file with empty metadata fields. All pages, images, fonts, and formatting remain intact.
Does this work on password-protected PDFs?
The tool attempts to read encrypted PDFs in compatibility mode. Results may vary depending on the encryption level. For best results, use an unprotected PDF.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. The tool is fully mobile-friendly and works on iOS and Android browsers. File sizes under 80 MB are supported.
Is the cleaned PDF identical in size?
The cleaned PDF may be slightly smaller or similar in size to the original. Metadata typically adds only a few kilobytes.
